Illegal Connection Causes Contingency in Sechura

Petroperu informs the general public of the following:

Petroperu has detected a crude oil leak at kilometer 790+630 of Section II of the Norperuano Pipeline (ONP), located in the district and province of Sechura, Piura region.

According to preliminary field inspections, the incident was caused by an illegal connection installed by third parties—specifically, an unlawful intervention on the ONP infrastructure. This type of action constitutes a crime and poses a significant risk to the environment, neighboring communities, and the integrity of a National Critical Asset (Activo Crítico Nacional – ACN).

Upon discovering the incident, Petroperu immediately activated its Emergency Response Plan, deploying specialized personnel along with first-response equipment and materials. Furthermore, key preventive measures were executed, including the closure of valves at kilometers 746 and 792, in order to isolate the affected section.

It is worth noting that, following a preliminary evaluation of the pipeline, no operational failures or geodynamic anomalies have been identified in the Olmos–Sechura area.

Petroperu has filed a formal complaint (No. 35485436) with the National Police of Peru (Policía Nacional del Perú – PNP) REGPOL Piura, to initiate the corresponding investigations and determine the liability of those responsible for this unlawful intervention. The company has also reported the incident to the competent regulatory and oversight authorities.

So far this year, this marks the third third-party incident recorded in the area, despite the company's repeated requests to reinforce security measures along the ONP. These efforts are essential to restoring internal order in the region and protecting this vital national critical asset.
