Illegal Gangs Attack Norperuano Pipeline and Threation Security Guard with Firearm
Petroperu activates emergency response protocols after discovering a fourth illegal valve tapping incident this year along the pipeline's Tramo II in Sechura.
Petroperu informs the public of the following event:
Petroperu detected a new illegal connection at kilometer 806+260 of Tramo II of the Norperuano Pipeline (ONP), which caused a hydrocarbon leak in the district and province of Sechura, Piura region.
Petroperu immediately activated its Emergency Response Plan, deploying specialized personnel along with first-response tools, materials, and equipment to the affected area.
During the field assessment, it was determined that the incident was caused by third-party tampering via an illicit connection, with no significant environmental impacts recorded. Additionally, it was verified that the manual valves located at kilometers 744 and 792 of Tramo II remained closed.
During the deployment of response actions, at approximately 14:30 hours, the security guard on duty reported the presence of two armed individuals on a motorcycle. Given the situation, he immediately proceeded to evacuate the area. However, the individuals pursued him and opened fire. The guard managed to find safety and was unharmed.
This incident was reported in a timely manner to the National Police of Peru. Officers from the Puerto Rico police station of the Piura Police Region (REGPOL) took the guard's statement at the contingency site, verifying the victim's account, which was officially recorded under document N° 35527840 dated June 23.
Petroperu regrets that illicit organizations continue to carry out these activities, damaging a National Critical Asset (ACN) such as the ONP. Consequently, the Legal and Regulatory Affairs area has filed the corresponding criminal complaint with the local Prosecutor's Office.
It is worth noting that this constitutes the fourth third-party incident so far in 2026, with a high incidence of illegal connections recorded in the section between Sechura and Olmos. These attacks persist despite repeated requests made by Petroperu to the competent authorities to reinforce security for this strategic national infrastructure.
