Petroperú receives recognition for sustainable cocoa project in the Amazon

Petroperú won second place in the 2026 ProActive Awards, "Weaving Alliances to Transform Territories," in recognition of the Ikam Kuitamat (Let's Take Care of the Forest) project, a cacao planting initiative that contributes to strengthening the cacao production chain, restoring deforested areas, and promoting new economic opportunities for Awajún families in the Amazonas region.

The project is being developed in native communities located near Section II of the Norperuvian Pipeline (ONP). In its first phase, it enabled the establishment of 115 hectares of cacao using agroforestry systems in degraded areas belonging to 80 Awajún indigenous families from the communities of Najaim Paraíso, Nueva Unida, Tayuntsa, and Alto Pajakuts, in the district of Nieva, province of Condorcanqui, Amazonas region.

The intervention was initially focused on the productive and environmental restoration of the territory. In this new phase, the project seeks to consolidate its sustainability by integrating producers into formal markets, strengthening their organizational capacities, promoting collective marketing, and consolidating the cacao value chain.

Ikam Kuitamat constitutes a model of indigenous economic development based on agroforestry, community organization, and market integration. Due to its characteristics, it can be replicated in other Amazonian territories with similar socio-environmental conditions, contributing to the generation of sustainable production alternatives compatible with environmental conservation.

This recognition adds to the one received at the GAIA SPE Peru 2025 Sustainability Awards, where the project achieved first place for its contribution to environmental conservation and sustainable development in areas of operational influence.

With this initiative, Petroperú reaffirms the importance of promoting sustainable interventions in the Amazon that integrate productive development, environmental protection, and capacity building for indigenous communities, under an approach of responsibility, dialogue, and shared value creation.
