Petroperú warns of repeated clandestine connections on the North Peruvian Pipeline

A new clandestine connection was detected at kilometer 806+855 of Section II of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), in the province of Sechura, Piura. This discovery brings the total number of such connections identified in the area since June to nine, highlighting the ongoing attacks against this infrastructure, which is designated as a National Critical Asset.

During an inspection of the site, a valve, a two-inch hose, and other equipment—presumably used for the illicit extraction of crude oil—were discovered. No hydrocarbon spill was detected.

The installation of these clandestine connections poses a risk to the integrity of the ONP, as they could damage the pipeline and lead to environmental incidents, thereby endangering both public safety and the environment. It should be noted that Section II has been out of operation since July 12, 2024, due to low crude oil inventory levels at Station 5.

Following this discovery, Petroperú activated its Emergency Response Plan and notified the Peruvian National Police so that appropriate action could be taken. The company also informed the Supervisory Body for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin), the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA), the General Directorate of Hydrocarbons of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI), among other relevant authorities.

Given the persistent nature of these attacks, Petroperú reiterates its call for the competent authorities to strengthen surveillance and protection measures for the ONP, in order to prevent further illicit acts and safeguard this infrastructure, which is of strategic importance to the country.
