Attacks on the North Peruvian Pipeline cause millions in losses to Petroperú

Acts against the ONP affect the health of communities and damage the environment.
- On March 19, 2025, a new attack (drilling) was reported against the infrastructure of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP) at kilometer 315+535 of Section II, located in the Sinchi Roca indigenous community, Manseriche district, Datem del Marañón province, Loreto region. Petroperú immediately activated its Contingency Plan, successfully sealing the drilling and containing the oil leak. However, company personnel were prevented from collecting the hydrocarbons and cleaning up the affected area.
- It is important to clarify that the various impediments and measures of force promoted by communal authorities and leaders of their representative organizations against ONP facilities are intended to pressure the Executive Branch to adopt decisions that guarantee the financing of local government investment projects. This situation is beyond Petroperú's jurisdiction and completely unrelated to its management.
- Since the attack, representatives of Petroperú, along with officials from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) and the Ombudsman's Office, have participated in various dialogue forums with the Sinchi Roca native community and its representative organizations, with the goal of reaching agreements that would allow for the initiation of cleanup activities. During the process, they have faced multiple adverse situations, such as the involuntary detention of workers and the obstruction of the operation of the security and containment systems.
- During the last meeting held on May 21, 2025, community representatives expressed demands for the hiring of 100 workers and daily wages (S/ 150), which are unacceptable to Petroperú due to the distortions and perverse incentives they would generate. They also threatened that if their demands were not met within 72 hours, they would proceed to remove the pipeline's safety clamp and the installed containment systems.
- Unfortunately, on May 27, 2025, a new attack against the ONP was reported, caused by the deliberate manipulation of the grapple installed at the drilling site at km 315+535, causing a new oil leak into the environment, which reached a nearby stream, aggravating the impact on the ecosystem and endangering the public health of the surrounding population.
- So far this year, four attacks have been perpetrated against the ONP. Petroperú demands that the competent authorities, within the scope of their powers, urgently adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the integrity of this Critical National Asset (CNA), whose operation requires the company to spend more than $120 million annually to ensure its operational and reliability. The continued occurrence of these acts of vandalism not only compromises the operational sustainability of the ONP, it also represents serious damage to the environment and human health.
