North Peruvian Pipeline records 12 clandestine connections in the last five months

Petroperú reports that, since June of this year, 12 clandestine connections have been detected on the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP)—illegal interventions apparently intended to extract crude oil for illicit activities. The most recent incident was identified early this morning.

The company views the persistence of these illicit acts as particularly serious, as they compromise the integrity of infrastructure that is strategic to the country and pose risks to nearby communities and the environment. In October alone, five clandestine connections were recorded, with the area between Sechura and Olmos experiencing the highest incidence.

The latest illegal intervention was detected today at kilometer 842+504 of the ONP, in the Bayóvar area, after monitoring systems and specialized Petroperú personnel identified a drop in pipeline pressure. The Emergency Response Plan was immediately activated, and a verification operation was launched in coordination with the Peruvian National Police (PNP), which led to the discovery of the affected site.

As part of its response, Petroperú deployed specialized personnel and contingency equipment to manage the situation and carry out containment efforts; they successfully plugged the clandestine connection and halted the outflow of crude oil.

Given the recurring nature of these attacks, Petroperú considers it essential to strengthen surveillance, control, and protection measures for the North Peruvian Pipeline. To this end, the company will continue to coordinate with the relevant authorities and will provide the necessary information to oversight and security agencies, with the goal of helping to identify those responsible and preventing further illicit acts.
