Petroperú wins first place in the Sustainability Award with its cocoa project in the Amazon
- The initiative benefits native communities along Section II of the North Peruvian Pipeline, promoting cacao cultivation with an agroforestry approach.

Petroperú won first place in the 2025 GAIA SPE PERU Sustainability Awards thanks to its "Ikam Kiutamat" project, an initiative that promotes the cacao production chain in native communities in the Nieva district, Amazonas region. This recognition highlights the company's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development in areas of influence of its operations.
Organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Lima Section, with the support of Perúpetro, the GAIA Awards annually recognize the best sustainability projects implemented by companies in the country's energy sector.
The "Ikam Kiutamat" project—which means "let's conserve our forests" in the Awajún language—promotes a sustainable production model based on cacao cultivation under agroforestry systems. This approach boosts local economic recovery, protects the natural environment, and strengthens the social fabric through community partnerships.
More than 80 Awajún families from the Tayuntsa, Nueva Unida, Najaím Paraíso, and Alto Pajakuts indigenous communities are actively participating in this initiative, which seeks to improve their living conditions through the production and marketing of quality cacao, respecting their cultural practices and environmental balance.
With technical support from Petroperú, the Ikam Kiutamat association, a community organization leading the cacao value chain in the area, was consolidated. This partnership demonstrates how the coordination between business and community can generate sustainable and replicable impacts in other regions of the country.
