Petroperú awards schoolchildren who won short story and essay contests in Talara

The students Valeria Mercedes Atoche Farfán and Jefferson Jesús Alcarraz Nizama, from the Federico Villarreal Private Educational Institution, were awarded for having occupied first place in the II Story Contest “Building Stories” and IV Literary Essay Contest: “New Talara Refinery. Clean and quality fuels for all Peruvians”, respectively, organized by Petroperú and in which more than 80 students from the oil province participated.

The student Valeria Mercedes Atoche Farfán, ranked first in the II Short Story Contest "Building Stories", with the story "The only desire". The second place was obtained by the student of the Educational Institution Cap. FAP Emilio Velarde Vargas, María José Alvarado Escobedo, with the story “An expedition in Las Capullanas”. Both students, together with their advisory teachers and their principals, were awarded with diplomas, trophies and technological articles for this important achievement.

In the Literary Essay contest, first place was won by Jefferson Jesús Alcarraz Nizama, a student at the Federico Villarreal Private Educational Institution, with the essay entitled: “Talara Refinery, change in the lives of Peruvians”. Second place went to the student Elena Santiago Cruz from the Educational Institution 15508 Domingo Savio, who was also awarded for her work "Building a better future". They were recognized along with their advisory teachers and principals with diplomas, trophies, and technology articles for their excellent performance.

During the ceremony, held at the Petroperú facilities, the finalist students and honorable mentions of both contests were also recognized. In the Short Story category, the schoolchildren: Cristofher Eduardo Ruiz Fiestas, Alexa Salazar Fernandini and Aaron André Moncada Echeandía were finalists. For its part, the honorable mention in the Story category went to Marco Paolo Chapilliquén Zapata.

In Literary Essay the finalists were Priscilla Jalheny Siancas Talledo, Miguel Armando Talledo Pérez and Diego Valentino Fernández Cruz. Likewise, the students Gisell Arellys Martínez Vílchez, Adriana Rafaela Ruiz Chávez and Adrián Smith Cruz Valverde were recognized as Honorable Mentions in the IV School Literary Essay Contest.

At the end of the ceremony, the director of the Local Educational Management Unit - UGEL Talara, Hugo Negreyros Sánchez, greeted the participation of the students in both contests, highlighting the important role of teachers and directors in promoting literary creation, the reading, as well as in the critical analysis of information for a personal position regarding a topic.

For his part, Eng. Óscar Vera, Talara Refinery Corporate Manager, congratulated each of the winners and finalists of both contests, urging them to continue cultivating their talent through unpublished works that reflect creativity and research. He also reaffirmed Petroperú's commitment to promoting culture and art in the city that hosts the New Talara Refinery.

The qualifying jury

The qualifying jury of the II Short Story Contest was made up of the Master in Creative Writing and winner of the 2020 Copé Gold award, Miguel Ruiz Effio and the doctor in Hispano-American Literature and prominent Peruvian storyteller, Jorge Valenzuela.

The evaluation of the works of the IV Literary Essay Contest was in charge of Giancarla Di Laura, PhD in Latin American Literature at the University of Arizona (United States); and the doctor in Peruvian and Latin American Literature and winner of the 2010 Copé Gold Award in Literary Essay, Mauro Mamani; as well as Aldo Durán, head of the Cultural Management Unit of Petroperú.

The contests were carried out in line with the Petroperú Cultural Management Policy and the Local Development Support Program of the Community Relations Plan (PRC) of the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) of the Talara Refinery Modernization Project (PMRT), with the objective to promote reading, encourage literary creation from an early age and motivate the school population to investigate the contribution that the construction of the New Talara Refinery represents at the local level.
